It's always fun when the girl that plays with paper makes it into the newspaper!  Jen Nevans from the Sachem wrote a lovely piece about the upcoming workshop I'll be teaching.  Here's the link for anyone that's interested!

An Update, An Award and a Workshop!

This update is long overdue.  For those of you that don't know, last year my mom was diagnosed with late stage lung cancer.  I've spent the past 15 months helping she and my Pops navigate dr's visits and chemo and radiation treatments (in excess of 125 appointments since July 2014). I'm grateful to live in Southern Ontario, our health care system is tremendous and the cancer clinic she's receiving treatment from (Juravinski) is one of the best in the world.

A very good friend told me that an individual doesn't get diagnosed with cancer, a family does and this is the most accurate description of cancer that I have come across.  Cancer isn't just about appointments or chemo or radiation, it's getting meals on the table, it's keeping spirits up, it's being ridiculous and pulling out clumps of hair and balancing them on the head of a bald friend that's come over to visit.  It's finding the funny when all you really want to do is pull the blankets up over your head.    It's insomnia, it's worry, it's heartache, it's hope.  It's feeling like you don't have the energy to stand and realizing that your friends will hold you up until you can get your legs underneath you again.  The past 15 months have taught me that cancer is a metaphor for life.

The next step in Mamma's treatment is a clinical trial.  We're hoping that the paperwork will be completed by mid November and her treatment will start shortly thereafter.

Thanks for all the support that has been sent our way, we really do appreciate it.

An Award...

_With everything else that has been going on I hadn't created many book sculptures  since last year.  I did make sure that I entered the art awards and auction presented by Haldimand Art Works in April.
I was delighted when I found out that my book sculpture "Dragon At Daybreak" had been awarded 1st place in the 3-Dimensional art category.

ANd, a workshop...

Picture
On November 8th I'll be teaching a book sculpture workshop during Dunnville's River Arts Festival.  The 3 hour workshop is open adults and youth and will take place from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. at the Dunnville Public Library (Garfield Disher Room).  Participation is by donation. Preregistration is required and can be done online by clicking here.  Please note that space is limited.

We will be creating the book sculpture "A Quiet Nest".  This is a beginner level book sculpture and I'm confident that anyone taking the class will be able to replicate these results!

All you need to bring with you is a desire to be creative, everything else will be provided!
